An Alliance Party councillor is to receive a substantial five-figure sum from a newspaper over a social media comment about her husband. Sorcha Eastwood, who represents the Lagan Valley constituency in the Northern Ireland Assembly, said the comment caused her "considerable distress". The remark was made on social media about her husband, who has a rare blood cancer. Ms Eastwood said she was "pleased" to have reached a settlement with the newspaper, which she said had "acknowledged the hurt and distress" caused by the comment. She said: "I hope that this settlement sends a clear message that this type of behaviour is not acceptable and will not be tolerated." The newspaper has apologised for the comment and said it had removed it from its website. A spokesperson for the newspaper said: "We deeply regret the hurt and distress caused by the comment and we are committed to ensuring that such an incident does not happen again." Ms Eastwood is a vocal campaigner for blood cancer awareness and has spoken out about the challenges faced by patients and their families. She said she hoped that the settlement would help to raise awareness of the importance of being respectful of others, particularly those who are going through difficult times.
