Mississippi State Fires Head Coach Zach Arnett After One Season

Arnett, who took over after the tragic death of Mike Leach, led the Bulldogs to a disappointing 5-6 record in 2023.

Selmon, Arnett relieved of duties, national search underway

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Mississippi State has fired head football coach Zach Arnett after less than one season, the school announced Monday.

Arnett, who was promoted to interim head coach in December 2022 following the death of Mike Leach, was named the Bulldogs' 35th full-time head coach on December 15, 2022.

But after a disappointing 5-6 start to the 2023 season, which included a 51-10 loss to Texas A&M on Saturday, Selmon decided to make a change.

"After careful consideration, I have made the decision to relieve Zach Arnett of his duties as head football coach," Selmon said in a statement. "This was not an easy decision, but I believe it is in the best interests of our football program."

Arnett, 37, finishes his Mississippi State career with a 5-7 record.

The Bulldogs will immediately begin a national search for their next head coach.
